Stephen Curry has the potential to become one of the select few players in the history of the modern NBA to play his whole, storied career for just one team. But Curry appears to have left the door open to at least the prospect of departing Golden State as well, as the team struggles to deal with Klay Thompson’s departure and if they can contend for a fifth title.

In the 2009 NBA Draft, Curry was selected by the Warriors with the seventh overall pick. During his 15 seasons with the franchise, he has won two MVP awards, four championships, and the MVP of the Finals. With just two years remaining on his current contract and Curry turning 37 this season, Golden State’s present and future are far from certain.

Curry has been the face of the Warriors franchise for the last ten or so years, so it seems inconceivable that he would leave. However, Curry hinted in an interview with Andscape that he may be open to playing for a different club if the Warriors absolutely collapse and lose their competitiveness.

It is difficult, don’t you think? In answer to a question about Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki, Curry informed Marc J. Spears, “I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life.” At this point in my profession, I think it’s feasible. Additionally, just because you are competitive doesn’t imply you will win the title. It does not imply success. Although you are clearly practical, winning is always the top priority. Staying the course does not guarantee that it will occur. In order to adapt to the current state of the league and the current positions of some of these excellent clubs, you need to change things up and continuously rethink what it looks like.

To be honest, I’m taking things one step at a time. That, in my opinion, is the only thing that can safeguard my happiness. It also lets me appreciate being who I am when I’m playing outside. And when it comes to simply using my imagination, I’ll keep making the choices that are ultimately best for me and my career. My goal is to triumph. To put it another way, let me simply say that I would find it difficult to put up with someone who is a bottom feeder only because they want to continue in that scenario. However, I don’t believe that will actually happen.

Before his deal expires in the summer of 2026, Curry is scheduled to earn $55.8 million this season and $59.6 million the next season. When Curry becomes an unrestricted free agency, he will be 38 years old.
