NBA player Steph Curry has chosen to auction off a pair of specially designed trainers in order to raise money for the families of those killed in the spa shooting that occurred in the Atlanta area last month.
.
The Golden State Warriors player supported the Asian community in the face of growing anti-Asian prejudice by donning the yellow, white, and black kicks during Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
The shoes, which were designed in collaboration with the Bruce Lee Foundation, honoured the memory of Bruce Lee by including his image next to the timeless phrase, “Under the heavens, there is but one family.”
“I think Stephen’s gesture is a beautiful example of allyship and solidarity in action,” said Shannon Lee, chairperson of the board of directors of the Bruce Lee Foundation.
I find it modest that he would use my dad and my family to symbolise the idea that, as my dad used to say, we are all related and should watch out for each other.
Six Asian women were among the eight people killed in the March shootings at three spas in the Atlanta region, which brought attention to the rise in anti-Asian violence in the country.
Advocates and officials assert that they have received thousands of reports of acts of xenophobic violence against Asians since the outbreak began.
On Sunday, Step Curry wore the specially made shoes.
Jeremy Lin, the first Asian-American player to win an NBA championship, has opened up about how the Covid-19 pandemic has made a problem worse in his nation. Lin and the Toronto Raptors took home the championship in 2019.
He talked about how he thinks some of the conversation around the virus has exacerbated anti-Asian sentiment.
Donald Trump, the former US president, drew criticism in particular for referring to the coronavirus as the “Kung flu” and “Chinese virus.”
Curry told The Undefeated before Sunday’s game that he was disgusted by the shootings in Atlanta.
He expressed “disgust, horror, and plain anger at why any violence ever occurs in our nation.”
Despite all that has occurred in the last year, let alone in our nation’s history, people still have to deal with senseless tragedy and worry for their lives. We must get better.
