The Golden State Warriors’ best player, Steph Curry, recently showed his generosity and dedication to gender equality on and off the basketball court.
It all started when Riley Morrison, a nine-year-old from Napa, California, wrote Curry a letter expressing her displeasure that his hallmark trainers, the ‘Curry 5’s, were exclusively offered on the Under Armour website in the males’ section.
After ten days, moved by Riley’s letter, Curry personally replied, apologising for the problem and pledging to work with Under Armour to fix it. Riley was reassured by him that the smaller sizes’ labels would be changed, and the Curry 5s would be placed in the girls’ department. As promised, the required adjustments to the website were completed without delay.
But Curry didn’t stop there. In a remarkable gesture, he informed Riley that he would send her a pair of the Curry 5’s immediately and also promised her an early pair of the upcoming Curry 6’s. In addition, he sent an invitation to Riley to attend a special International Women’s Day celebration with him in Oakland on March 8, demonstrating his dedication to uplifting young girls like Riley via equality and athletics.
Social media users praised Curry’s actions widely; his letter was liked more than 121,000 times and retweeted 20,000 times on Twitter. Aside from his charitable work, Curry is a role model on and off the court. He is returning to action after missing three weeks due to a groyne injury.
This story not only highlights Curry’s generosity and advocacy for gender equality but also underscores the positive impact athletes can have on their communities, especially young fans like Riley Morrison.
