Regarding the Dubs’ comeback for their franchise legacy, fans had harsh criticism.
One of the most significant transitions in the history of the Golden State Warriors is under underway. The Dallas Mavericks will receive veteran shooting guard Klay Thompson as part of a three-team sign-and-trade agreement. Both the disappointment with Thompson’s trade return and his departure from the Dubs are shared by the supporters.
Thompson signed a $50 million, three-year contract with the Mavericks. Dallas sent Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets in return, and the Warriors got two second-round selections. Although Golden State got something in exchange for Thompson leaving, many don’t think it was sufficient. Following Shams Charania’s report from the Dubs’ return pieces, some fans posted the following comments:
One commenter exclaimed, “Woohoo, we got two second-round picks for a franchise legend!”
“Their wait was excessive. Another commenter questioned, “Could have gotten more value if they would have been willing to trade him at any point before this.”
Another said, “Mike Dunleavy getting cooked in the negotiations room.”
One fan saw the bright side of the Warriors only getting two second-round selections in exchange for Thompson, despite the general dismay.
You’re viewing this entirely incorrectly. No one is a greater Klay fan than me. But we have [De’Anthony] Melton, who is a fantastic defensive player. Klay has limitations. [Melton] makes 39% of his shots from three. He is 26 years old. Klay is thirty-five years old. We are eligible to participate in the Lauri [Markkanen] sweepstakes since we received two selections for trade capital and sixteen million trade dollars, the fan said.
Shortly after the Klay Thompson deal, Golden State and De’Anthony Melton reached an agreement on a $12.8 million contract. Melton, as previously stated, is a strong two-way player who should assist in filling in for Thompson. Furthermore, before the summer is out, the Dubs may make further changes.
How will the Warriors move on in the wake of Klay Thompson’s exit?
Stephen Curry was one among the many that wished Thompson would return to the Dubs. Following his historic 0-for-10 shooting performance against the Sacramento Kings in the Warriors’ 2024 NBA Play-In game, Curry stood by his longtime backcourt partner.
According to ClutchPoints’ Jack Winter, Curry stated, “Everyone’s gonna talk about one game and I know he wanted to play better, but we go through so much over 82 games, and the fact that he was able to turn his season around with a new role, adjusting to coming off the bench for a long period and then back in the starting lineup, really just having fun playing basketball and being at peace out there.”
Since I know he’s a real champion and we all get ready to perform at our best when the lights are shining, that’s what worries me more. When that doesn’t occur, no one has to provide you with information. Because winning is all we want to do. Aside from the numbers, that’s all that counts, Curry continued.
Curry gave it his all, but Thompson felt it was time for a change of scenery. He teams up with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic to try to win the Dallas Mavericks another championship. Though it is difficult to watch the seasoned Splash Brother go from the Bay, his achievements will live on.
