Dejounte Murray, a guard with the Atlanta Hawks, was a name that the Los Angeles Lakers often heard mentioned when the trade deadline arrived. He may be a better fit with LeBron James and Anthony Davis because he brings a different skill set to the starting point guard D’Angelo Russell.
There was much desire between Los Angeles and Atlanta to complete a trade before the deadline. But it appeared that the Hawks were breaking ground on this trade in order to get Austin Reaves, and general manager Rob Pelinka voiced his unwillingness to include the third-year guard.
A third team could negotiate to close the difference and reach a common ground. Russell found a home with the Brooklyn Nets, who were rebuilding, while the Hawks had no use for him. These three teams were close to reaching a deal, but ultimately were unable to reach one, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report:
Atlanta now owns the top choice in the 2024 NBA Draft and may choose to undertake their own rebuild. It is reasonable to presume that Pelinka will at the very least follow up to see if they can complete the task they began in February. Murray could undoubtedly aid the Lakers’ roster decisions, which are essential if they are to contend next season.
However, Russell’s player option means he might walk for nothing, which adds to the complexity. Furthermore, even if Trae Young stays, there is still the problem that the Hawks would not want Russell. Thus, it’s possible that Brooklyn will make a second trip around to face Russell, bringing the 28-year-old back together.
