James Jayson Tatum Sr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 3, 1998. Justin Tatum is his dad, and Brandy Cole is his mom. That’s what his dad, Justin Tatum, did for fun. He played basketball at Saint Louis University before becoming a gym teacher and basketball coach at several St. Louis schools. His mother is a lawyer in the St. Louis area named Brandy. She turned in her last paper at Saint Louis University School of Law.

While he was still a junior, Tatum chose Duke University over well-known schools like North Carolina and Kentucky. He scored 29.6 points and grabbed 9.1 rebounds per game in his last year of high school. They won the Class 5A state title and had six games with 40 points or more because of this.
Tatum played in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Game because he was so good in high school. He won the kill race and led the East team with 18 points. Tatum appeared in 29 Durham games and scored 16.8 points, grabbed 7.3 rebounds, passed the ball 2.1 times, and stole 1.3 times per game.
