In his seven years in the NBA, Jayson Tatum has built up quite an impressive record.
The 26-year-old forward has already been named to five All-Star teams and two All-NBA First Teams. He is still in the running for league MVP as the best player on the 54-14 Celtics team.
Tatum has done a lot for himself, but his move to Boston has also started a new era of competition for the legendary NBA team.
Since Tatum was picked third overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Celtics have made the playoffs every year. They have gone to the Eastern Conference Finals four times and the NBA Finals in 2022.
One of the things that has been said against Tatum is that Boston hasn’t been able to get over the hump, especially in the 2022 Finals against the Warriors. Tatum scored 21.5 points per game and only made 36.7% of his field goal attempts in that six-game series, which ended in a crushing loss on the biggest stage in basketball.
For now, Tatum and the Celtics are still looking for that elusive championship. However, Lakers star LeBron James doesn’t think that Tatum’s lack of a title should take away from his reputation as one of the best players in the game.
“I think we have a lot of hopes for JT, but he’s won a lot so far in his career,” James said on “Mind The Game,” his new podcast with JJ Redick. “It’s clear that everyone wants him to get better. Four conference finals and a trip to the finals before age 26 is still very good. He keeps getting better, and they’re now in a place where they can win another title.
However, Tatum has been the target of criticism for years after several disappointing playoff exits. James did say that some NBA stars did not win a title until they were in their late 20s.
James talked about Tatum: “He’s 26 years old, and I think he’s been to four conference finals and one NBA Finals.” “I wasn’t 28 when I won my first one.” Nico (Jokic) may have won his first one when he was 27. I believe Michael Jordan was also 28 years old.
“Adding Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday for a bag of Lay’s potato chips helps with the staff.” That also helps. There’s no doubt that JT is the best player for Boston when it comes to scouting.
The Celtics didn’t exactly give up a bag of Lay’s to get both Porzingis and Holiday for this season, but the results speak for themselves.
Because Brad Stevens had a busy winter last summer, the Celtics had to trade Marcus Smart, Robert Williams, and Malcolm Brogdon in order to get Porzingis and Holiday.
Okay, so far this season hasn’t gone well for those three former Celtics.
A beat-up Smart has only played 20 games this season for the Grizzlies, who have had a lot of other terrible injuries. Williams, on the other hand, only played six games for the Trail Blazers before having surgery that ended his season. Brogdon played in 39 games for Portland before getting hurt in his elbow last month and missing time.
