Stephen Curry and Draymond Green combined for 33 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals to help the visiting Golden State Warriors overcome the ailing San Antonio Spurs 117-113 on Sunday in a late-season Western Conference game.
Following a careless beginning, Golden State rallied to reduce the deficit to eight points at the half and then added 14 points in the third quarter to take the lead. With 59.4 seconds left, San Antonio led 113-111 because to six baskets from Victor Wembanyama during a 9-0 run.
Klay Thompson increased the Warriors’ lead to five points with a second-chance 3-pointer with 39 seconds left. Wembanyama missed two free throws, leaving Green to make one of his two with 3.9 seconds remaining to secure the win.
With eight games left, the Warriors (40-34) have won two games over Houston in the race for the final play-in spot and 10th place in the Western Conference. This is their fourth straight win, all of which have come away from home.
Brandin Podziemski scored twelve points, Klay Thompson scored thirteen, and Moses Moody scored 10. Jonathan Kuminga missed the Warriors’ third straight game because of tendinitis in his knee.
Wembanyama led the Spurs in scoring with 32 points and drew nine rebounds. Malaki Branham, Tre Jones, and Zach Collins all scored twelve points apiece, and Sandro Mamukelashvili added ten points and eleven rebounds. 18 points were scored off the field by Cedi Osman.
Starters Devin Vassell (foot) and Jeremy Sochan (ankle), as well as important reserve Keldon Johnson (foot), were not available for San Antonio (18-57).
The Spurs had established a 32-19 lead at 1:28 into the first quarter of play, but Chris Paul’s pullup jumper with a second remaining brought Golden State within 34-27. San Antonio restored its lead to ten points after Green’s layup sliced Golden State’s lead to 60-52 at the half.
Osman led the team in scoring with 15 points before the half, while Curry led Golden State with 12 points. The Warriors failed to try a single free throw during the entire half.
The Warriors took command early in the third quarter with a 14-0 run that featured nine points from Green and a 3-pointer from Curry. During the fourth, Golden State extended their lead to 11 points, and they led 89-81 entering the final 12 minutes of play.
