The shooting season for Los Angeles Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell is the best of his career. He is now on track to set a club record. The Lakers beat the Atlanta Hawks, and Russell made six 3-pointers. That tied Nick Van Exel for the most 3-pointers made in a season for the team.
Russell has had a rough start to the season, so this is a big accomplishment for him. Russell reached this important goal, and head coach Darvin Ham was very proud of him. Ham also told Russell that he should keep being bold.
After the Lakers won, Ham said, “I think it’s been great.” “He learns his craft, and it’s great to see how well he plays overall.” But when it comes to shooting, he’s by far the best on our team, and we have a few. I told him to be as bold as possible from the 3-point line. He’s shown that he can go off from there during spurts in the regular season and playoffs.
He does a great job of trying to change up his places of attack with and without the ball. We just want him to stay aggressive. He is one of our best cutters. When defenses try to zone us and double-team the post, he sneaks in the middle of the paint and gets floaters and bunnies. But he is good from three points away, and we need all of these skills.
Regarding Russell staying aggressive, Ham said that the Lakers guard has more than permission to keep scoring. “He’s got a green room.” “Not a green light, a green room,” Ham said. “It opens up a lot when he comes off the pick-and-roll and you set a good screen at the right angle. Teams know they have to go over or we’re running something for him to come off; it’s an off-ball screen, and they know they have to chase over.”
“It makes everything easier in the pocket, from a quick dump off to a pocket dunk or pocket pass, hockey assist, or pocket pass to someone on the other side for an open shot.” Being able to be bold and shoot well from beyond the arc opens up a lot of options.
As everyone knows, Russell’s great hitting has made it a lot easier for the Lakers to score. Russell was moved by Ham’s words about having a “green room.” The Lakers coach has a lot of faith in him.
“Well, I respect that he trusts me that much. Try hard to feel like I earned that and wasn’t given to me. So knowing that’s something I worked hard to do and will continue to work hard to do, I mean, it seems normal to me. With humility.”
If the Lakers want to make it to the playoffs, they need Russell to be at his best, and Ham is telling him to stay competitive and keep doing what makes him great.
