Jayson Christopher Tatum Sr. was born on March 3, 1998, in St. Louis, Missouri. His dad is Justin Tatum and his mom is Brandy Cole. His dad, Justin Tatum, used to play basketball. Before becoming a gym teacher and basketball coach at different St. Louis schools, he played basketball at Saint Louis University. There is a lawyer in the St. Louis area named Brandy, who is his mother. She graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law.

There is a former NBA player in Jayson Tatum’s family named Larry Hughe. Tatum’s dad played with Hughe in high school and college. Besides that, he is connected to Tyronn Lue, who used to play basketball in the NBA and now coaches the Los Angeles Clippers.

Tatum played basketball for the first time at Creve Coeur, Missouri’s Chaminade College Preparatory School. That’s where he first showed promise. Before his senior year, Tatum picked Duke University over other well-known schools like North Carolina and Kentucky. In his last year of high school, he averaged 29.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. This helped Chaminade win the Class 5A state title and have six games with 40 points or more.

Tatum did so well in high school that he was chosen to play in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Game. He won the kill contest and got 18 points to lead the East team. He was also important at the Jordan Brand Classic because he led his team to win. A lot of people chose him as the 2016 Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Tatum had a great high school career, but not so great in college. He hurt his foot early in the 2016–2017 season and couldn’t play in the first few games. His first game for Duke was on December 3, 2016, and they beat Maine 94–55. He got 10 points in that game.

Tatum helped the Blue Devils win the ACC Tournament Championship when he was in college.
