Sam Hauser scored 30 points and made 10 3-pointers, which were the most in his career. These performances helped the Boston Celtics beat the Washington Wizards 130–104 on Sunday night.
The NBA-leading Celtics made 24 3-pointers and never fell behind in a game where they were missing three players. Jayson Tatum also scored 30 points and made six of them.
Tatum said, “That’s why we have that stay-ready group, to be honest, for days like this.” “We can just put certain guys in certain spots and at certain times.” And everyone expects us to keep up the beat.”
Derrick White (left-hand sprain) and Jaylen Brown (right ankle sprain) were hurt in the first of back-to-back games. Kristaps Porzingis (right leg strain) was also hurt. The Celtics play Detroit on Monday.
There were also doubts about Tatum because of a hip problem. Instead, he played in his 31st straight game and teamed up with Hauser, who was making his 16th career start, to help Boston score 81 points before halftime and build a 36-point lead in the third quarter.
It was great to see Hauser be so sure of himself and bold, said Celtics Coach Joe Mazzulla. “I liked how guys looked at him. He got his shots while we were still carrying out our plan. That’s what a tool he is.”
Hauser made 10 out of 13 shots from long range before leaving in the middle of the third because of an ankle injury. He wasn’t around after the game.
She said, “I haven’t heard anything.” “We’ll find out because I know he had an X-ray after the game.” I think it was X-rays to be safe.
Seventeen of Boston’s 28 3-point shots in the first half were made. Even though they took out their starters in the middle of the third quarter, the Celtics shot 48% from beyond the line.
The Wizards, who had four starters out, had the worst record in the NBA. Jordan Poole got 31 points for them. A bruise on Bilal Coulibaly’s right wrist kept him out of the game.
Tatum scored 18 points in the first quarter, which gave the Celtics a 45–27 lead. The Celtics scored the most points in the first quarter of the season.
Tatum also set Hauser up his sixth 3-pointer with 6:29 left in the second, which tied his previous high score, and then he made his seventh three minutes later.
Hauser made three more three-pointers to start the second half. With 9:27 left in the third, the last one made Boston’s lead 92–56.
Before he left, his friends told him to try to beat Marcus Smart’s record of 11 three-pointers for the Celtics and Klay Thompson’s record of 14 for Golden State.
“I know Klay did it, and it was pretty cool,” said Al Horford, a forward for the Celtics. “Those of us who shoot know those records…. We knew about it and were rooting for Sam.
