There were high hopes for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors as senior teams going into the season, but they haven’t lived up to those hopes yet.
The ninth and tenth seeds in the Western Conference, these two rivals from the Pacific Division, played each other on Saturday night. They were hoping to build some steam to move up the standings. All of the stars were on the teams, which made this game between these two teams even more interesting. Unfortunately, the Warriors won in the end with a 128–121 score after Anthony Davis got hurt. It was a very important win with only a few games left to play.
The teams got off to an even start, with nine points each. However, Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell scored all nine for the Lakers, while Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins scored all nine for the Warriors. The Lakers purposely left Kuminga open early, and he punished them.
Then, as he always does against the Warriors, LeBron James got going and scored eight straight points, including back-to-back threes, to put his team ahead.
Early on, Klay Thompson was also on fire off the bench for Golden State. But Davis got hot inside to give the Lakers a 36–30 lead at the half.
D’Angelo Russell got things going again with a 3-pointer to start the second, and Thompson answered right away with his own. Stephen Curry wasn’t scoring at the time, so Thompson gave the Warriors a huge boost when he came off the bench.
The Warriors were making progress on their lead when James made a big four-point play for L.A.
The Lakers, on the other hand, were without Davis for the whole second quarter because he got poked in the eye and had to go to the locker room. So, the Lakers’ middle defense had a hard time, and the Warriors took a 67-66 lead into halftime.
But the Lakers had to play the rest of the game without Davis because he hurt his eye and couldn’t play. The Warriors slowly grew their lead in the third quarter, making things very hard for the Lakers on both ends of the court.
Curry finally got going with a four-point play that put Golden State ahead by ten points for the first time. After that, though, the Lakers came back strong. Reaves made a three-pointer, and then James finished a three-point play.
The Warriors still had a 102-93 lead going into the fourth quarter, even though there wasn’t much defense going on.
In the fourth, James tried to be a superman by making back-to-back three-pointers. Then Reaves scored his own basket.
From there, the game turned into a ref show with lots of obstacles. A James three-pointer looked like it cut the Lakers’ lead to four points, but it was later decided that he was out of bounds, so the score was wiped out. The shot clock then stopped working, which made the game run more than 15 minutes late.
That really took the wind out of the Lakers’ sails, as they never got back on track and ended up losing badly.
