Anthony Davis’s impressive effort helped the Los Angeles Lakers overcome the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night, 120-109. Davis also finished with a career-high seven steals in addition to a season-high 25 rebounds.
With three blocks and five assists, Davis enjoyed one of his most productive games in his storied career. The nine-time All-Star team played better than Minnesota, which was missing its best two big men and four regular players because of injury. He contributed to the Lakers winning their 12th game out of their previous 17 by grabbing 21 rebounds in the second half alone and a 21–4 run to begin the fourth quarter.
With 29 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and a steal of 19 points from Austin Reaves, LeBron James helped the Lakers defeat yet another top squad. The Lakers had already defeated Milwaukee and Oklahoma City during their six-game homestand. Los Angeles leads the current season by six games, 36-30.500.
Naz Reid scored 25 points and nailed five 3-pointers in his first game as a starter for Minnesota, which made 16 of its 46 3-point attempts, a season best. Reid performed remarkably well despite having recently ended Friday’s game against Cleveland with a career-high 34 points. However, the dreadful wolves’ interior defence was unable to stop Davis in the absence of Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns.
To make matters worse for the Wolves, who have lost four of their last six games, Anthony Edwards added 25 points. Minnesota missed nine consecutive field goals, which allowed Los Angeles to take the lead in the fourth quarter.
On Friday night, when James returned to the court, D’Angelo Russell, who had missed nine games this season due to injury, scored 44 points to help the Lakers defeat Milwaukee 123-122. Despite suffering a left shoulder injury from his collision with Giannis Antetokounmpo during the game, Davis was still able to participate.
Gobert was forced to sit out because of soreness in his right hamstring, but Edwards continued to play despite an ankle problem. Gobert received an early Sunday $100,000 fine from the NBA for numerous infractions that called into question the reliability of the league’s Friday officiating. For the third time this season, Gobert missed a game.
Towns has missed his team’s last three games after learning that he has a torn meniscus in his left knee. The big man will most likely miss the postseason following surgery.
In addition, Kyle Anderson was unable to participate because of stiffness in his right shoulder, and Monte Morris missed his second straight game because of a strained left hamstring.
Lakers swingman Cam Reddish was not available due to a strained right ankle. He missed two additional games after returning from a month-long injury layoff in late February.
