On Sunday night, Anthony Davis led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 120-109 victory over the ailing Minnesota Timberwolves. Davis also recorded a career-high seven steals and a season-high 25 rebounds.
With three blocks and five assists, Davis enjoyed one of his most productive games in his storied career. The nine-time All-Star outplayed a Minnesota team that was missing its best two big men and four regulars because of injury. The Lakers won their 12th game out of their previous 17 as he grabbed 21 rebounds in the second half alone and led a 21-4 rally to begin the fourth quarter.
The Lakers upset another top club with LeBron James scoring 29 points, passing out nine assists, collecting eight rebounds, and dishing out another 19 points to Austin Reaves. The Lakers had already defeated Oklahoma City and Milwaukee during their six-game homestand. Los Angeles is six games above (36-30).500 for the first time this season.
Naz Reid scored 25 points and drained five 3-pointers in his first start of the season for Minnesota, which made 16 of its 46 3-point attempts, a season best. Despite having just concluded with a career-high 34 points against Cleveland on Friday, Reid put forth yet another outstanding performance. However, the wolves’ meagre interior defence was unable to halt Davis in the absence of Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Anthony Edwards contributed 25 points as well for the Wolves, who have lost four of their last six games. In the fourth quarter, Los Angeles gained the upper hand as Minnesota missed nine consecutive field goals.
James returned to action on Friday night as the Lakers defeated Milwaukee 123-122 thanks to a 44-point performance by D’Angelo Russell, who had missed nine games this season due to injury. Davis had a left shoulder injury from his collision with Giannis Antetokounmpo during the game, but he was able to return to the court.
Edwards continued in spite of an ankle problem, and Gobert was forced to sit out because of right hamstring soreness. Gobert was fined $100,000 by the NBA early on Sunday for a number of infractions that raised questions about the reliability of the league’s Friday officiating. For the third time this season, Gobert missed a game.
Towns has missed his team’s last three games after learning that he has a damaged meniscus in his left knee. The big man will likely miss the postseason following surgery.
In addition, Kyle Anderson was sidelined by pain in his right shoulder, while Monte Morris missed his second straight game because of a strained left hamstring.
Lakers swingman Cam Reddish was out with a strained right ankle. He missed two additional games after returning in late February after a month-long injury layoff.
