The Boston Celtics and Jayson Tatum looked unbeatable for a month, but they’re still people. People also fall down sometimes. In that case, the Celtics lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday after blowing a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter. With forward Dean Wade having a great game, the Cavaliers shot a lot in the last nine minutes to win 105–104.
The officials made the choice about who had the last possession of the game. Tatum tried a game-winning fadeaway with only seconds left in the game as his team was down by one. Tatum’s shot missed, but he was able to get Cavs guard Darius Garland to foul him. But after looking at it again, the referees chose to throw out the call, which meant Cleveland won the game.
JT, who was clearly upset, admitted in the press conference that he could have made a faster try during the ending possession.
“I need to have gone a little faster in case something like that happened.” Tatum told SB Nation’s Noa Dalzell and Celtics on NBC Sports Boston, “Maybe we have more time or another chance.”
Before taking the last shot, the Celtics star used up all 19 seconds of the game clock. As soon as he made an early try, there might have been another chance. Tatum knows what he needs to do from now on, so what’s done is done.
It’s still a close race between Jayson Tatum and the Celtics.
Even though they’ve lost their last two games, the Boston Celtics still have the best record in the league (48-13). They are clearly the best team in the Eastern Conference, as shown by their team statistics.
Topping all teams in terms of points scored (121.0), the Celtics also get the most rebounds (47.2 per game). Also, Boston makes the most three-pointers in the league (16.3 per game), and their defence is strong as shown by the fact that they are ranked second in the league in stops per game (6.6).
Again, Jayson Tatum is having a great year. With 27.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, the five-time All-Star is dominating. And after losing in the playoffs more than once, including the 2022 finals, Tatum is probably more hungry than ever to win a title. If he has a good supporting group, the 2023–24 season might finally bring the crown back to Boston.
