The winner of the February Player of the Month award is Jayson Tatum. The Boston Celtics player has been playing at a very high calibre, as his recent play has led us to anticipate.
In the ten games that he participated in in February, Tatum averaged 27.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 6.7 assists. He made 48% of his field goals and 35.1% of his three-pointers. Of those ten games, the Celtics won nine; their lone defeat came on February 1st against the Los Angeles Lakers. Boston defeated the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks in March, extending their winning streak.
Tatum has received the Player of the Month award twice already this season. In Boston’s first eighteen games, he averaged 27.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists. He also took home the October/November award. Tatum has doubled his total of four Player of the Month awards this season. He has received these honours throughout his career.
Jaylen Brown and Tatum both deserve some more acclaim. After an incredible three-game run that ended in an explosive explosion against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, he was voted the Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday.
After coming back from the All-Star break, Tatum has been forced into the MVP discussion. He is, after all, the star player for the squad with the league’s best record. It makes sense that he would be considered a strong contender for the coveted individual award.
It’s interesting to note that Luka Doncic, a strong competitor for MVP, won the Western Conference Player of the Month award for his outstanding offensive counting stats.
Even so, Tatum’s season is notable when the backdrop of sacrifice is included. He plays on a team that is loaded with All-Star calibre players. On both ends of the court, he is playing basketball at an elite level while yet letting his teammates take centre stage. Even so, Boston’s objective is still to win a championship.
A banner being raised in the TD Garden to mark the end of the season will be the true celebration of any individual honours earned along the way.
