LeBron James scored 31 points and made a key 3-pointer in overtime to help the Lakers beat a tough opponent, but they were never able to get ahead. It was their ninth win in 12 games. James only needs nine more points to become the first player in NBA history to score 40,000.

The Wizards’ Jordan Poole scored 34 points, which is the most of the season, and Marvin Bagley III added 23 points, also a season high. Despite this good performance against the Lakers, the Wizards are still three games away from having the worst losing streak in the team’s history. In OT, Washington missed five straight shots and turned the ball over twice, so they couldn’t score in the last 3:50.

Kyle Kuzma, a former Lakers forward, scored 20 points but missed a 3-point shot with eight seconds left in overtime that would have tied the game. For Washington, Corey Kispert scored 20 points too.

The Wizards came back from being down eight points in the fourth quarter to win the game. They led for most of the first three quarters. Before the overtime break, Poole made his fifth 3-pointer of the night, giving Washington a 126-124 lead. But Austin Reaves tied it for LA with a fadeaway shot.

Poole missed a 31-footer with 0.1 seconds left in the game.

James played against Washington just one night after scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ amazing comeback win over the Clippers. He missed two games around the All-Star break because his ankle was always giving him trouble.

James, who is 39 years old, will almost certainly score 40,000 points this Saturday on national TV against Denver, who is the defending winner.

There were 22 points from D’Angelo Russell for the Lakers.

Wizards rookie Bilal Coulibaly missed his second straight game with a sprained right hip. On the other hand, Avdija came back from missing three games with a sprained left heel.
