The Jays had a great time at the 73rd NBA All-Star game on Sunday night.
Their Eastern Conference team won 211–186 and set a new scoring record. One of them also competed for the game’s Most Valuable Player award, and all of them scored 20 or more points. Tatum also met Larry Bird, which was on his bucket list.
Tatum won the Most Valuable Player award at the All-Star game with 55 points to set a record. This year, Brown was up for the award. He scored 36 points, which was second on the East team and behind only Damian Lillard’s 39 points, who won MVP. After this game, Brown got at least 35 points for the second year in a row during the All-Star game.
Tatum said that his night was a little less busy. He only played for more than 21 minutes, and only about eight of those minutes were in the second half. He scored 20 points by making 8 of 13 shots, though.
“This year it was nice to kind of take a back seat and chill out. I got to enjoy the show a little bit,” he told the press after the battle.
Still, Tatum did start what ended up being the East’s best showing in the history of the All-Star game in terms of scoring. He scored the first points for either team that night. Early in the game, Giannis Anteokounmpo passed the ball to him, and he made a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer from the right corner. Even though Tatum has only tried 15 shots from that part of the court all season for Boston, he made the shot go in.
At the start of the game, Tatum played with Anteokounmpo, Lillard, Tyrese Haliburton, and Bam Adebayo. But soon, he got to share the court with Brown, who is his real friend. Last year, this change didn’t exist because Tatum and Brown were on different teams because of the rules for captain-chosen rosters. This year, when the game went back to being East vs. West, they played together.
With 6 minutes left in the first quarter, Brown joined Tatum in the game. From that point on, they shared the court for a total of seven minutes and one second.
During those shared minutes, there were some funny moments, like when Brown helped Tatum make a 3-pointer near the end of the second quarter and when Brown grabbed an offensive rebound in the middle of the third quarter and threw it to Tatum for another 3-point try. But they weren’t on the court together until late in the first quarter, which might have been their most shared moment.
Tatum agreed to put on a headset from the bench at the end of the first quarter and talk with the TNT crew that was calling the game. With 2:22 left in the quarter, he put on the headset and was on the call for the whole minute. A running layup in transition and a 3-pointer made it possible for Brown to score five points in that short amount of time. Every player made it clear after the game that they were glad to be wearing the same shirt again. Tatum was cheering for him the whole time.
Brown said, “It was cool to be on the same team as JT this time.” “We won and had a good time.”
Tatum also said, “Being on the same team as JB is much better.” I’m used to it. I mean, we’ve been practicing against each other for seven years, so I’m getting tired of it.
Tatum also got to see the show because Brown went off in the second half. Brown scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and 11 points in the third quarter to make a late run for the MVP award. In the end, though, it wasn’t enough to catch Lillard or Haliburton, who is from Indiana and was voted second-team MVP after scoring 32 points, rebounding seven times, and passing the ball six times.
One of the best parts of the night for the Celtics was when Tatum met Bird for the first time one-on-one during the warmup. Tatum and Celtics Vice President of Communications Taylor Kielpinski-Rogers found Bird on the sidelines just before the game started. They had a short meeting with him. Tatum will always remember that moment.
“I didn’t know Larry Bird. He and I have never been in the same room. “That’s never worked out, no matter how crazy it sounds,” Tatum said. “Our PR girl, Taylor, saw him sitting on the sidelines before the game and grabbed me, saying, ‘He’s over there.'” Then I got to meet him and tell him how great it was to meet him. He told me he was looking forward to meeting me. It was crazy to hear him say that.
From the Celtics’ point of view, that meeting was the cherry on top of this All-Star game. Brown played well and is now in the running for MVP. Tatum and Brown got the win together, and it was the first time that two of the best wings in Celtics history shook hands. That’s the best thing about it.
