Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Detroit Pistons at home. But they didn’t have much time to party because they had to get on a plane right away to play the Utah Jazz in their last game before the All-Star break.
There was no LeBron James in the game, but the Lakers still beat the Jazz 138–122 to sweep the back-to-back set.
Early on, D’Angelo Russell got Los Angeles going with a pair of layups. Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura then made back-to-back 3-pointers, putting the team ahead 14–11. It was easy for Hachimura to score in the halfcourt after having a great game the night before.
The defensive boards were good for Los Angeles, which helped them get their first double-digit lead of the night with a 12-3 run. At the end of the first quarter, the Jazz were able to close the gap, but the Lakers still led 34–28 going into the second.
When the second half started, Spencer Dinwiddie and Russell led the offence for the second unit. They set up goals and scored to make Los Angeles’ lead 11 points again. Hachimura also kept playing great on offence, being mean and making buckets to keep Utah at bay.
But even though Hachimura scored a lot, the Jazz quickly got back into the game thanks to Jordan Clarkson’s hot shooting from the field. Even though Anthony Davis scored some important points at the right time, L.A.’s lead was only 70–69 going into halftime.
With 21, Hachimura scored the most points in a game ever in the first half.
At the start of the third, Collin Sexton scored five points in a row because the Laker defence was slow to react. Even though Hachimura kept shooting lasers at the basket, the Jazz kept the game close the whole time.
While Davis scored 10 straight points, Los Angeles was able to calm down, but it wasn’t enough to get ahead of Utah. Davis kept up his strong play on offence, and the Lakers went into the fourth quarter ahead 108–92.
When Christian Wood tried to make a 3-point shot, he hurt his ankle. He was able to stay in the game after walking it off, though. Utah made some progress towards the lead, but Davis came back and scored right where he left off.
After making his fifth three-pointer of the night, Hachimura scored 36 points, which was the most in his career. This gave the Laker lead to 17. Los Angeles had a great offence that Utah’s defence couldn’t stop, and they won before the break. Davis had a great night as well; he scored 37 points and led all scorers.
