The Los Angeles Lakers presented one of three statues of Kobe Bryant today. Bryant is one of their all-time best players.
One of the statues shows him wearing the number 8 jersey. Another will show him wearing the number 24 jersey, and a third will show him with his daughter Gigi, who died in the same chopper accident as Kobe.
At this point, only one figure has been shown to the public, and people have different thoughts on whether it’s a good way to honour such a hero. After getting 81 points in a game, Kobe raised his finger in the air. That’s the second most points ever scored by a single player.
There was a time when Kobe’s wife Vanessa said, “This isn’t just for Kobe. It’s for all of you who have rooted for him for years.”
“Just so you know, Kobe chose the pose you’re about to see. If anyone has a problem with it, tough shit.”
Kobe’s shirt numbers (#8 and #24) and those of his daughter Gigi (#2) were shown off by the team today, February 8, 24. Both sadly died in a January 2020 chopper crash that killed eight people.
He joins Elgin Baylor, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jerry West, and Chick Hearn as Laker players who have been honoured in this way. Vanessa, his old coach Phil Jackson, Jabbar, his old friend Derek Fisher, and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss were all on stage at the reveal.
In honour of the event, the team will wear special Black Mamba outfits today when they play the current NBA champion Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets beat the Lakers in last year’s Western Conference Finals. Kobe made the black shirts himself, and the team wore them for the first time in the 2017–18 season. They feel like leather, which is a nod to Kobe’s famous nickname, “Black Mamba.” The numbers “8” and “24” are also in the features.
Fans of the NBA remember Kobe as a tough rival, one of the ten best players of all time, and a fan of the game. He played for twenty years and won five titles. He was also named an All-Star 18 times.
He was a very important player in the history of the game, and your favourite player probably also likes him. RIP to a GOAT.
