Derrick White and Svi Mykhailiuk compete in a salad making contest as part of a YMCA nutrition event

Yesterday, Svi Mykhailiuk and Derrick White had a day off from playing three games in four nights. They went to a nutrition event at the Dorchester YMCA with kids and competitors made salads and smoothies.

SunLife and the Celtics put on the event together. It was part of the “Fit to Win” initiative, a four-week program that teaches kids from YMCAs in the Greater Boston area about exercise, nutrition, healthy habits, and being mindful.

Two of the four teams at the YMCA were led by White and Mykhailiuk. The teams had to make the best smoothies and salads, and NBC 10 host Kwani Lunis and Sun Life U.S. CFO Neil Haynes were among the judges who tried and rated each team’s final products. White and Mykhailiuk talked to the kids about healthy habits and game-day meals while the kids chopped veggies and blended fruits.

“Wellbeing and health are important for everyone, so it’s fun to hang out with kids in the community and teach them about food,” White said.

During the competition, Mykhailiuk and White made fun of each other and told the judges why they should vote for them.

As Derrick White showed the judges his team’s salad, he made sure to stress that the chopped apple was especially “prepared with love.” Eventually, his team beat Mykhailiuk and won the battle to make the best salad. To go with their chef’s hats, each kid on the team was given shades.

During his news conference after the game, White made sure to point out that his team won even though Mykhailiuk’s team sent more kids to the vegetable table than they were supposed to.

White told the press, “They sent their whole team and hid the ingredients.”

Noa Dalzell on X: "Derrick White made his case to the media after yesterday's salad-making competition at the Dorchester YMCA. “They took all the avocados,” White said of Svi Mykhailiuk's team. “

“We just used the time to our advantage,” Mykhailiuk said.

“All the avocados were taken,” White said. It’s okay, though; we still found a way to win. We fight even when things are hard.

Fit to Win was started by the Celtics and Sun Life in 2015. Since then, more than 2,000 kids have taken part in it. During the show, kids win prizes with Celtics themes. For example, yesterday, the winner’s smoothie-making team got Celtics beanies, and White’s team got green sunglasses. In addition, they learn healthy eating and exercise habits and fill out a report at the end of the program to show what they’ve learned.

On their day off, both players said they liked being able to go out and see people.

White said that YMCAs are important all over the world because they help people get out of the house, have fun, and meet new people. “A program like this one helps them learn about nutrition, and I hope they had fun doing it. I made a friend.” Awesome things like that always are.”

The Celtics have had very few days off in January, so Mykhailiuk said it was nice to be able to forget about hoops for a day.

Mykhailiuk said, “It’s nice to come here and hang out with the kids and not think about basketball. Just have fun, get to know everyone, and give back to the community.”

White will find out later today if he is an All-Star in basketball. “It would be a great honor to make,” he said. “I’m not putting too much pressure on myself because I know that if I make it, it will be because the team is doing so well.” Although I haven’t given it much thought, I know that if I do make it, it will be thrilling and an honor. Should I not do it, I shall simply enjoy some quality time with my family.

Svi said that he made sure to vote for White on his All-Star ticket because White has become one of his best friends on the team.

Mykhailiuk laughed and said, “I voted for him every time.” “Like only for him.”

If White doesn’t make the All-Star team, what happens? Besides, he can say that he won the Fit to Win salad-making contest.
