Many foreign visitors have been captivated by China’s Terracotta Warriors throughout the years, and NBA player Stephen Curry paid homage to the Chinese cultural classic on Sunday during his three-day tour of Beijing.
Curry, the premier player for the Golden State Warriors and the current NBA Most Valuable Player, disguised himself as an ancient Chinese warrior on Sunday at the start of his China tour in Beijing’s 751 D-Park by donning a suit of Chinese armor that was given to him as a gift by a local fan.
Hundreds of fervent Chinese fans stood on the sidelines of an indoor half court in the park, waving posters and chanting Curry’s name when he appeared in a Chinese helmet, to a thunderous ovation.
This was the All-Star guard’s first trip to China following his NBA championship victory with the Warriors in the 2014–15 season, and his second visit following the NBA Global Games in 2013.
“(Compared to last time), I came back with a championship this time, and I can see the passion of Chinese fans (for basketball) is growing,” stated the 27-year-old.
After setting an NBA record for the most 3-pointers made in a regular season (286) in 2015, the 1.91-meter guard has gone on to become the most prolific shooter in NBA history.
Curry showed off his exceptional shooting ability in a 3-point shootout with four chosen fans on Sunday during the fan-interactive event. He then gave them sneakers and t-shirts signed by him.
Along with his second signature basketball shoe, the Curry Two, the Beijing tour saw the worldwide debut of the sneaker with US sportswear company Under Armour, who recruited Curry as a brand ambassador in 2013.
Following the fan event, Curry went to Tsinghua University High School to teach student athletes and impart his expertise on the game to them.
Curry will travel to Chongqing and Shanghai on Monday and Tuesday as part of Under Armour’s Road Show branding campaign in Asia.
