Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors will be participating in his first NBA All-Star Game in 2024. No, this will not be his first game; in fact, he has been selected as an All-Star ten times.
Rather, it will be a first since Curry will be playing in an All-Star Game for the first time in his career as a substitute player.
The Indiana Pacers’ home arena, Gainbridge Fieldhouse, will host the 2024 game on February 18. The NBA revealed the starting lineup for that game on Thursday. Two backcourt players and three frontcourt players from both the East and the West make up the roster (the league is going back to the old conference setup this year).
However, Curry’s name was not mentioned when the Western Conference backcourt was revealed. Rather, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Luka Dončić of the Dallas Mavericks will start.
The players (25%) and media (25%) cast their votes, while fans (50%) choose the starting lineups for the All-Stars. Although Curry had support from the fans, who have always voted for him (finishing second to Dončić), he did not place in the top two on the remaining ballots. After Dončić and SGA, Curry came in third place among players who voted, and Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves came in fourth place among media voters.
Next Thursday, when the seven additional players (two backcourt, three frontcourt, and two wild cards) are revealed, Curry is a virtual lock to make the Western Conference reserves. The coaches in the league vote on reserves, and commissioner Adam Silver chooses any injury reserves.
Even if I would have preferred to have Curry in the starting lineup for the tenth time, the outcome is what matters. With 33.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, 9.3 assists, and 6th-best EPM in the league for Dončić and 31.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 2.3 steals per game, and 2nd-best EPM in the league for Gilgeous-Alexander, respectively, both players are having incredible seasons, and their teams have outperformed the Warriors this year.
LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, two-time MVP Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets, and former Warrior Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns round out the starting lineup for the West alongside Dončić and SGA. Tyrese Haliburton of the Pacers, Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, and team captain Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks make up the starting lineup for the East.
