Steph Curry, Snoop Dogg help unveil renovated basketball court in Long Beach

Two sports legends surprised dozens of young fans in Long Beach on Tuesday, with one making an appearance on the court and the other on stage.

Reigning NBA Finals MVP Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors and entertainment icon Snoop Dogg helped to reveal a newly rebuilt basketball court at the Boys & Girls Club. Snoop Dogg also addressed the children on the importance of community.

In Martin Luther King Jr. Park, the club debuted its custom basketball court, which was designed by comic book artist Damion Scott (real name: Damion Scott). With their unexpected visit, Snoop (born Calvin Broadus) and Steph (born Wardell Curry II) took nearly seventy children by surprise.

Here, I learned how to play basketball and football, as well as how to interact with others and build ties in the community. Snoop Dogg said in a press release from Under Armour, “I basically learned how to converse, rap, and just be myself in this very park.”

The renovated and refurbished court was made possible by the cooperation between Snoop Dogg and the Steph Curry Brand, which aims to use youth sports to give back to low-income neighborhoods and give kids a safe venue to fall in love with the game.

Curry said, “Our goal is to establish a space where individuals can enjoy themselves, immerse themselves in the competition, make personal investments, and be surrounded by amazing coaches and programs.”

According to club organizers, hundreds of kids from the neighborhood Boys & Girls Club as well as other organizations including Long Beach Parks and Recreation and the Snoop Youth Basketball League will benefit from the rebuilt court. With more than 200 kids enrolled, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach have been providing community service for approximately 40 years.

“The major objective is to go back and see the kids trying to outperform us in their endeavors. The primary objective is to provide these kids more opportunities than we were able to,” Snoop said.
