The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks faced off in an unusual 5:30 p.m. PT tipoff on Wednesday night. This is the third meeting between the two clubs this season; the Mavericks having won the previous two.
They had access to all the stars, including Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Luka Doncic, who were all wearing uniforms. The Lakers ultimately triumphed, winning 127-110 to go back to.500 at 21-21.
The big men got off to a great start in this game. Dereck Lively II scored Dallas’s first six points, while Anthony Davis put Los Angeles on the board with a slam.
With the score tied at 10, the Mavericks scored seven straight points to seize early control of the game. But after that, Davis gained momentum and made two baskets to pull his team closer to the lead until James gained momentum and they regained it.
Despite the early starts from James and Davis, Max Christie and Rui Hachimura both played well off the bench, and at the end of the first quarter, Los Angeles had taken a 32–26 lead.
In the opening half of the second quarter, both teams played poorly, making mistakes and missing easy shots. But eventually, Doncic found his rhythm, and after Austin Reaves scored five straight points, Los Angeles’s offense really got going.
After Taurean Prince called Grant Williams for a Flagrant 1 foul, the Mavericks were able to play well in the second half and cut their deficit to 55-53 at the break.
James scored a three-point play while on the offensive at the beginning of the third quarter. D’Angelo Russell then put up five straight points, and Davis finished with a basket to increase the lead to double digits for the first time.
Russell then made another three, and the Lakers continued to extend their lead when Reaves connected Prince with an alley-oop in transition. James added three more goals, and the lead swiftly increased to 22.
Dallas answered with eight consecutive points after that, but Davis continued to make outstanding plays, and Los Angeles lead 97-80 going into the fourth and final quarter.
The Mavericks would have needed to get off to a fast start in the fourth quarter in order to have a chance to win the game once more. However, Russell ensured that didn’t happen by continuing to hit deep balls, extending the lead to 23 two minutes into the fourth.
Dallas eventually gave up too soon, allowing Los Angeles to win with ease.
