The Phoenix Suns beat the Los Angeles Lakers 127–109 on Thursday night. Devin Booker scored 31 points and Bradley Beal scored 37 points, including eight 3-pointers.
For the Suns, Kevin Durant scored 18 points, and they beat the Lakers for the first time in five games. Also, it was Frank Vogel’s first win over his old team. Vogel was the Lakers’ coach for three years. In 2020, Vogel led them to the NBA title in the Walt Disney World bubble.
After winning the NBA In-Season Tournament last month, the Lakers have lost five straight games and are now 5-11. D’Angelo Russell scored 19 points off the bench. Los Angeles had seven players score in double figures, but they turned the ball over 17 times, which let Phoenix score 28 points.
In the third quarter, Beal scored 20 points, and early in the fourth, the Suns had a 32-point lead. He missed making one more 3-pointer to tie the Suns’ single-game record, which was held by six players.
LeBron James scored 10 points on 3 of 11 shots, dished out 9 assists, and grabbed 5 boards. Johnathan Williams and Austin Reaves both scored 13 points. Following a 27-point deficit in the third quarter, none of the three players played in the fourth.
The Lakers had won two straight games, but now they were 19-20, which is below 500.
Cam Reddish started the game, but he didn’t play in the second half because his knee hurt.
He had his 10th 30-point game of the season. In the first quarter, when the Suns were ahead by 11 points, he scored 16 points.
James made a fadeaway that put the Lakers ahead 7-6 before the Suns took over. Booker made a 19-foot jump shot to start an 11-2 run that put Phoenix ahead by eight points in less than four minutes.
With two minutes left in the first quarter, Booker made another jump shot that gave the Suns a 32-15 lead. The Lakers then made a late run to get within 36-25 at the end of the quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, Los Angeles kept making progress. After Jerod Vanderbilt’s 3-pointer, the score was 40–34, but that was as close as they would get for the rest of the game. Phoenix answered with seven straight points as part of a 10–2 run.
To end the run, Josh Okogie did a drive dunk while Jaxson Hayes fouled him. With 7:44 left in the first half, Okogie made a free throw to finish the three-point play and make it 50–36.
